Unless you’re heavily sweating or covered in physical dirt, you don’t need to be washing your hair everyday.
Shampoo is designed to clean the scalp and remove excess oil, but if it’s overused shampoo can actually damage your hair. Shampoo strips the important oils the scalp produces and can leave the hair and scalp too dry. It’s ironic because you may want to wash away oil or dandruff, but can actually be repeating the cycle and making the problem worse.
To help prevent damage, only shampoo the roots of your hair. The ends will be cleaned when you rinse the shampoo out of your roots. Cut back by one hair wash weekly until you’re happy with the way your hair and scalp feels. Generally, most people should be washing their hair no more than two times a week.
In case you need more convincing, here are more reasons to cut back on hair washing:
- It strips your of its natural oil.
- It fades color faster.
- It dulls shiny locks.
- It causes more split ends.
- It's expensive.
- It's bad for the environment.
- It causes product build up.
- It leads to more heat styling.
Of course the quality of your hair care products matter too! We’ll have more posts about this soon! There’s no one size fits all approach, but give any hair change a routine a month before deciding it doesn’t work for you. This gives your hair and scalp time to adjust.
